Conference Program
Day 1 | October 20, 2023
Fiorenzo G. Omenetto's research spans nonlinear optics, nanostructured materials (such as photonic crystals and photonic crystal fibers), biomaterials and biopolymer-based photonics. Most recently, he's working on high-tech applications for silk.
Blending Bodies: Scent as an Ecological Language
Jake Eshelman ia an artist and visual researcher exploring the complex relationships between people, our environment, and everyone we share it with.
Non-Canonical Olfaction
Assistant Professor - Department of Biology, Boston University
An Open-Protocol Modular Gas Sensing Platform
Lucas L. Lopez Serrano is the Co-Founder and CTO at Volatile AI
Aryballe Technologies’ bio-based approach uses functionalized silicon photonics and machine learning to assess odors. Hear from Tristan Rousselle, the Founder and CEO of Aryballe Technologies
The Limits of Power: Accessibility in Perfumery
Founder, The Institute for Art and Olfaction
Saskia Wilson-Brown presents an overview of her research into accessibility in the field of perfumery at University College Dublin’s SmartLab, briefly covering touch-points hindering access to the tools and knowledge of scent-making and current efforts to expand perfumery from product to practice.
This year’s moot court explores if human odors can lead to criminal convictions. Can we smell guilt? Can we edit human genes to release certain smells when a person is guilty? With the popularity of of Generative AI, the complications in fair use-copyrights, could it be used to edit genes to produce the smell of guilt.
Stuart J. Firestein is the chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University, where his laboratory is researching the vertebrate olfactory receptor neuron.
